'Fresh Prince' Father James Avery Dead at 65, Watch Some of His Most Memorable Scenes

James Avery, who played the father on "The French Prince of Bel-Air" has died at 65 on Tuesday, December 31, 2013. 

Avery's publicist, Cynthia Snyder, told The Associated Press that Avery died Tuesday. She did not immediately know the cause of death or where he died.

His "Fresh Prince" co-star Alfonso Ribeiro tweeted news of Avery's passing. "I'm deeply saddened to say that James Avery has passed away," Riberio tweeted. "He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly.

James Avery's most famous role was as Phillip Banks, the stern but loving uncle to Will Smith's character on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." The show was about a Philadelphia teenager who is sent to live with his wealthy Los Angeles relatives.
