Sonny John Moore, world famous by his professional name as “Skrillex," was born on January 15, 1988, in Highland Park, Los Angeles. On December 12, 2011, he was also named MTV's Electronic Dance Music Artist of the Year. Here are some surprising things to know about the American DJ:

  1. Sonny Moore collaborated with Red Bull to produce a documentary titled "Let's Make a Spaceship," which premiered on October 11, 2014 at the ACL Festival after his headline performance. The said documentary and his headline performance are still available for stream at Red Bull TV's website.
  2. In the year 2004, he found that he was adopted, after being confused for a family friend's child in a grocery store. It was later revealed that his parents adopted him as a baby from a family friend, who would often come over and spend time with him. However, he had no idea that she was his biological mother.
  3. He was enrolled in a private academy school at Los Angeles to specialize in arts, at the age of 12. Just after two years, he was home schooled due to bullying at the academy.
  4. He collaborated with Boys Noize, and formed a side project named "Dog Blood," in the year 2012. Their debut single, consisting of the songs "Next Order" and "Middle Finger", was released on August 12, 2012 on Beatport and iTunes. The song "Next Order" managed to top Beatport's Techno chart.
  5. Skrillex organized a collaboration with the remaining members of The Doors, who provided vocals on his song "Breakn' a Sweat" for his EP "Bangarang."
  6. In an interview with BBC 1, he admitted to have been affected by Synesthesia, a condition where the person's senses are merged. It is said that people who have synesthesia can see colors when they hear songs, taste flavors when they read words, or feel textures when they see numbers. In the case of this DJ, he sees light yellow when he hears his song “Take Ü There.”
  7. At the age of 16, in an effort to establish himself as a music icon, he contacted Matt Goof of the emo rockers From First To Last and offered to be their guitarist. However, he ended up becoming their lead vocalist.
  8. It was on June 7, 2010 that he released his official Skrillex debut EP, "My Name Is Skrillex," as a free download on his MySpace page.
  9. His haircut has become famous in its own right, that there is even a fake Skrillex Hair Twitter Account. The band Electric Valentine have even written a song ‘Girl, You Got Skrillex Hair’ about it.
  10. He dated singer Ellie Goulding for almost a year, but the relationship failed as the hardest thing was their crazy schedules, making it so hard for them to see each other.
  11. He is a self-professed science fiction nerd, who describes his most popular song, "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites," as "Transformers’ meets Final Fantasy." He has even expressed interest in scoring science fiction films if the opportunity ever arose.
  12. It was at the age of 13, that he got started in his music career. He started making music by downloading the program ‘FL Studio.’
  13. He is reportedly the king of the celebrity death hoax. One of the most famous incidents involved a freak yachting accident in Bermuda, due to which "RIPskrillex" became a popular Twitter hash tag for a while.
  14. On January 15, 2017, he tweeted "Happy Birthday" with a link to a new From First to Last song which featured him on vocals. He later joined the band in Emo Nite LA for the first time in nearly a decade.
  15. For his most popular remix "Red Lips," a track by Miami duo GTA, he has made a sci-fi inspired music video, in collaboration with Apple Music.
  16. Before becoming famous by the name "Skrillex," he went on by the moniker “Twipz.” He used to release music on YouTube by the said name, some of which are still available online.
  17. Skrillex quit From First To Last after suffering from vocal chord problems. He later revealed that singing was not his real passion.
  18. It was reported that during one of his birthday parties, his famous hair, caught fire by accident, when he leaned in too close to his cake's candles.
