Yummy or Yucky? Coronavirus-Themed Foods are Putting a Smile on People's Faces

Although the world is wrapped in fear and uncertainty because of the coronavirus pandemic, chefs and bakers still found humor in the situation and created unique meals that will put a smile on people's faces. One of them is a coronavirus-themed burger created by a chef at Pizza Home in Hanoi, Vietnam. 

The chef, Hoang Tung, said that he dreamed up the burgers. His creation featured green-tea stained buns with small crowns that are made to look like the microscopic image of the virus, and it is his way to help take the fear out of the disease. Tung told Reuters that he and his friends have a joke that if you are scared of something, you should eat it. That is why the virus is not scary anymore after you eat a burger in the shape of the virus, that way of thinking can help spread joy to people during this difficult time. 

Coronavirus themed food

Pizza Home in Hanoi Vietnam is a takeaway shop that is selling around 50 "Corona burger" a day. Although Vietnam is on lockdown due to the pandemic, the business is still doing pretty well. 

In France, Jean-François Pré, a pastry chef and a chocolatier created coronavirus Easter eggs. The chocolate eggs were painted in black and were dotted with red painted almonds to look exactly like how the virus looks while viewed under a microscope. According to the French-language newspaper Le Telegramme, Pré devised the eggs to bring humor into the unfortunate situation after he grew tired of hearing about the coronavirus in the news all the time. He began selling the coronavirus Easter eggs at his shop in Landivisiau, located in Brittany, northwestern France, just a few weeks before the country went on lockdown. 

Other foods linked to the pandemic

The microscopic image of the virus is not the only one that bakers and chefs are turning into edibles, there are other coronavirus-themed foods that have been featured online because of its uniqueness and because of the humor behind it.

In western Germany,  the Schuerener Backparadies bakery included two different coronavirus-themed creations to their food selection. Customers can purchase biscuit versions of the face mask emoji and they can purchase toilet roll-shaped cakes. The owner of the establishment, Tim Kortuem, said that the cake symbolizes the toilet paper shortage that we are facing because of hoarders. He wanted to put light into the situation so he made the toilet roll marble cake that is wrapped in white fondant etched with tiny diamond shapes. 

Kortuem told Reuters Television that the cakes and biscuits were an instant hit with the customers and they are making 200 cakes and biscuits in a day. The coronavirus-themed foods help their bakery's sales while Germany is on lockdown. 

In America, a New York doughnut shop has dedicated its new creation to infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, a member of President Donald Trump's coronavirus task force. He became the talk of the town because of his straight-forward speeches about the pandemic. 

Nick Semeraro, the owner of Donuts Delite in Rochester, said that they wanted to find a way to cheer up the people in their neighborhood. They were impressed by the way that Dr. Fauci handled the situation and they loved his messages. This was their way of giving back and saying thanks. Semeraro said the shop has sold thousands of "Fauci doughnuts" and some are even asked to be sent to different states.
