You've been working towards your dream, and all you have to do now is get into a good medical school in Texas. The following are some tips to help you get through the application process.
Practice for the Exam
You'll need a good MCAT score, and to ensure this happens, you want to practice. The more you practice, the higher the chances of getting the score you want. The Blueprint MCAT practice test is a great way to prepare for the exam, and it's available to you now. There's no need to rush anything. Take the exam when you feel you're ready.
Start Early
It's important to submit your application as early as you can. Doing so increases the chances of acceptance and eventually finding work in one of the many medical centers in Houston and across the state. The AMCAS application can be turned in in early June. Make sure you do so because it makes everything much easier for you. Keep in mind that you can only turn it in if you have the grades from spring. If you don't have those yet, then wait until you do. The application process takes time, so if you start early, you'll give yourself time to get it done promptly.
Apply Right
You'll want to apply through the Texas Medical and Dental Schools Application Service, or TMDSAS. There are only ten schools in Texas that you can apply to, and you'll only be able to do so through TMDSAS. Again, you want to start the application as soon as you can. When you're done with your application, be sure to go over it a few times to make sure you're not missing anything or made any errors. Missing items or mistakes could lead to delays, and you don't want those right now.
Out of State Issue
Getting into one of these schools is hard, but it's possible. One thing to know about these schools is that it's harder to get in if you are out of state. Yes, these schools will favor Texas residents over foreign folks from other states. If this is you, then you better take additional steps to let them know why it's vital you go to their school instead of the ones in your state. The more specific you are, the better your chances.
300 Character Rule
Remember that the TMDSAS allows you to use 300 characters to talk about your extracurricular activities, which is different from other states. Be sure to make those 300 characters count. Say what you need to say concisely. Think about this for a while before you start writing, which can help you zoom in.
It's Not Optional
According to the TMDSAS, one of the additional essays is optional. The one required is the personal essay, but you want to do everything you can to impress. To improve your chances of getting in, write both essays, and be sure to stick to the character limits they provide. Following directions carefully shows you are serious.
These are some essential things to keep in mind, but there are many rules to keep in mind, including the recommendation letter rule. Remember that you can only submit three letters of evaluation. You could also just submit one Health Professions Committee letter. Hopefully, all of this information makes it easier to apply to med school in the state.
