The crisp breeze, bright foliage, and dwindling crowds make fall a prime season for yachting, according to boating enthusiast Juan Monteverde.
As a shoulder season, the fall offers better prices and more options, even if you're booking boats, hotels, or attractions at the last minute.
As a lifelong boater and world traveler, Juan Monteverde has long held an appreciation for experiencing the change in seasons from the deck of his yacht.
Here are his top picks for fall boating vacations.
Spain
"I grew up in Spain, and that's where I first developed a love of boats and sailing," he said. "The water there is beautiful, the food is delicious, and the people are wonderful. You can't ask for a better spot."
Vacationers keen on experiencing vibrant European city life should head to Barcelona. You can spend your days on the deck of your boat and your nights in the city, getting the best of both worlds.
"Spain is a late-night country. We rest in the middle of the day and stay up a little later at night, which is perfect for a vacation," Juan Monteverde said. "You can enjoy your days in the sun, take a nap, then head out for a late dinner at some of the best restaurants in the world. And the entire city stays up with you, so it always feels alive."
Throughout October and November, the city of Barcelona experiences very little rain and maintains an average temperature that ranges from 55 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, making it perfect for an autumn excursion.
New York
Staying stateside can cut down on your costs and travel time, and there is no better time to experience the wonders of New York than in the fall.
The trees that line the Hudson River Valley burst with resplendent crimson, ochre, and purple tones late in the year, while the harbor town of Montauk makes a great home base to experience America's greatest coastal towns.
"It's an amazing place to visit, with beaches and state parks and one of the finest sunsets I've ever seen," said Juan Monteverde. "It's so close to New York City, but an entire world away. Even the air feels different. It's got a feeling that you can't beat in the fall."
Using Montauk as a base, Monteverde suggests vacationers take advantage of the nearby attractions. From town, it's a short boat ride to the coast of Connecticut, where stunning views and quaint harbor cities churn out New England charm.
Washington
Vacationers on the opposite coast can enjoy the pristine scenes of Washington state's San Juan Islands.
This chain of tiny, green islands is home to a wide away of wildlife, stunning scenery, and cozy New England hamlets.
"The San Juan area is well-known to established sailors, but it's great for everyone. They have a lot of infrastructures built up to accommodate families or couples who want to boat around the islands and enjoy the scenery," Juan Monteverde said. "It makes a great place to hire a boat, learn to sail from a professional, or rent a yacht and really take your time enjoying the place."
With an average temperature of 58 in October and 50 in November, the San Juan Island has just the right amount of crispness to complement the salty sea air.
Whether you plan to sleep aboard your vessel or enjoy one of the cozy bed-and-breakfast inns that dot the islands, you'll find everything from restaurants to hiking trails to farmers' markets is easily accessible.
Florida
If you're interested in hanging on to the last vestiges of summer before the cold hits, consider taking your boat to the Sunshine State.
With its moderate, subtropical climate and laid-back attitude, Florida's marinas are the perfect spots to launch a final warm weather vacation.
"If you're not ready to store your boat over throughout the winter, you can always sail down to Florida and go visit it throughout the winter months," said Juan Monteverde. "If you get a head start in the fall, you can enjoy all the feelings of a Florida summer in between crowds. You'll be there before the snowbirds fly down for the winter, but after the summer crowds have gone."
If you prefer slightly cooler weather, Monteverde suggests boating from Fort Myers. The Gulf Coast city loses some heat in the fall, but never sacrifices its leisurely pace. Situated near Sanibel and Captiva islands, Fort Myers is a perfect spot to experience warm weather boating without the crowds.
For a true summer feel, Florida's southern coastline stays warm throughout the year. The laid-back vibes of Key West or the spicy flavor of Miami offer fall, heat seekers, a fantastic choice of vacation options on the water.
"Leaving from that area is great because the Bahamas are just two hours away, so it's easy to pop over and enjoy the islands," Juan Monteverde said. "It has something for everyone."
