The first people to ever perform something similar to today's Bungee jump was carried out by young men from Pentecost Island in the Vanuatu archipelago. They would hurl themselves off wooden platforms with their legs attached to vines to prove their manhood. Meanwhile, others say the first bungee jump was made from the Clifton Suspension Bridge in England in 1978.
Now there is some minor danger to this extreme sport with a one in 500,000 chance of being killed in a bungee jump. There is a higher likelihood of death when you drive at speeds of more than 100 mph. Despite its inherent risk, there have only been a handful of deaths from Bungee jumping. Frequent injuries have included dislocations, rope burn, back injuries and eye trauma.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the highest is 764ft (233m), off the Macau Tower in China. Jumpers experience four to five seconds of freefall at up to 125mph.
Bungee jump cords are rubber inside and either nylon or cotton on the outside. Several cords are bundled together to make the line very strong. Cords can be more than 1,000 feet long.
